Egg Fruit: A Unique Fruit with an Unusual Taste

Egg fruit is an unusual fruit of sapota family. Here are some facts about this unusual fruit and why you must give this fruit a try.

         Egg fruit (Canistel) got its name due to its egg shape and the edible part of this Yellowish orange fruit resembles the egg yolk, except that it is more sweet. Scientifically, this fruit is known by the name Pautaria campechiana. This fruit is native to parts of South East Asia and Western ghats of South India.

           This fruit has a large seed and this seed  helps its propagation. The young fruits will be green and glossy, while the ripe ones will be dull coloured and yellowish. Young egg fruits are rich in sap and hence one must wait until the fruit ripens to taste. Once ripe, the fruit is so soft that it can be broken with hands and the edible portion can be eaten. It must be hand picked to get the fruit in its best form and carefully . The ripe fruit  can spread aroma in the surroundings and it can attract large number of birds. The skin can be easily peeled off and this fruit can be enjoyed with or without peeling.

         Tastes sweet and it grows on an evergreen tree that can reach a height of  about 30 ft in tropical and subtropical climate. Moderate rainfall and dry climate benefits the plant to produce the highest yield.  Grows well in sandy to clayey soil.

       Egg fruits are rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C and protein. It can be turned into delicious milk shake, ice creams or mixed with yogurt. The pulp can be added to variety of other desserts.
